So after having given away hundreds of dattis at this point, I've discovered something that I hadn't thought of, but that really makes sense. If I give the gift before the datti, people feel like the coin represents an obligation, and they're not inspired, but if I give the datti before the gift, then they have this sense of anticipation and excitement-- excited about receiving a gift, like unwrapping a birthday present, and excited about the gift that they're going to give. So here's a rule of thumb worth following:
Give the datti before the gift! |
